Safety and Woolgoolga beaches are two longer sandy beaches located either side of the sandy foreland formed in lee of Woolgoolga Reef. Safety Beach (NSW 89) extends 1.2 km north of the foreland to south Mullaway Head. The small Darkum Creek runs south for 1 km behind the beach before exiting across the southern end. The beach can be accessed from the northern headland car park, or in the south by walking 200 m from the Safety Beach car park. The beach has a single bar, which is usually cut by a few rips in the north, with a permanent rip against the headland. To the south the protection from the reef lowers waves to less than 1 m, producing an attached bar which is only cut by rips during higher waves.
