Between Bull Pup and Shelly points is 1.3 km southeast-facing bay containing Racecourse Beach (NSW 492) with curves for 1.5 km between the two points. It is backed by a near continuous foredune, crossed by a small creek towards the south. A beachfront caravan park extends south of the creek mouth. The beach can also be accessed from the northern car park by the main road. It receives waves averaging 1.5 m at the northern end, decreasing to less than 1 km in lee of dune-capped Shelly Point, which extends 500 m seaward. The waves maintain a continuous attached bar, cut by up to 8 rips, with rip intensity decreasing in the south. A strong permanent rip run out against Bull Pup Point, with a usually weaker rip against Shelly. Southerly winds have mobilised sand off the northern end of the beach and blown it up to 1 km inland forming low dune sheets, which were previously quarried, and are now being stabilised. read more
