Nelson Beach (NSW 428) commences at the low rocky point and curves to the south for 1.2 km (Fig. 4.335), terminating at a section of rocky shore, which includes a 50 m long southern pocket of sand. It faces due east to the bay entrance 9 km away, and is the highest energy of the bay beaches. It receives low swell averaging about 0.5 m, which maintains a usually steep, cusped reflective beach, while the seagrass is restricted to 500 m offshore. However during periods of high waves, a bar and up to 10 beach rips form along the beach. The entire beach is backed by a foreshore reserve, which includes a car park and picnic area.
