Swimming is not recommended at this beach. Puckey's Beach has a strong, permanent rip against the rocks and at times out flow from a creek. There are also hidden rock shelves. This beach is unpatrolled. The rips continue to Fairy Meadow and beyond. The closest patrolled beach (North Wollongong Beach) can be found 150m to the south. North Wollongong Beach and SLSC (founded in 1914) is located (approx) 150m to the south. The beach is orientated to the east-northeast and receives some protection from southeast waves from Flagstaff Point, which trends 1 km to the southeast, with waves averaging 1.2 m. These maintain a single bar usually cut by 3-4 rips (Fig. 4.298 Under normal conditions the rips are small and infill with sand following periods of low waves. However when waves exceed 1 m and during summer northeast waves, the rips intensify. Fairy Meadow Beach and SLSC (founded 1951) is located 1.3 km to the north (NSW 370b), with access via a road across the former swamp. A car park and dressing sheds are provided immediately behind the dune.
