The 28 Mile Crossing is a 2 km long 4WD track that leaves the old highway and skirts most of the backing dunes to reach the beach at a point where coarse shell debris in the sand maintains a steep, narrow beach. The 12 km of beach between 28 Mile and 32 Mile Crossing (148H) is totally dominated by the coarse shell grit, as a result the beach is usually soft and steep and 4WD driving is difficult. The surf zone however is a 400 m wide low gradient three bar system, with rips spaced every few hundred meters in the inner surf zone. The Coorong National Park begins 3 km south of the 28 Mile Crossing and runs along the beach for 132 km to Murray Mouth.
