Mills Beach is a 700 m long, north to north-west facing beach, backed by boatsheds and a vegetated bluff for most of its length. The Mornington Life Saving Club and car park are located at the southern end. Tanti Creek also flows out at the southern end and has deposited a blanket of rocks under the sand. A low seawall curves around from the creek mouth to the club house. The lifesaving club's new premises provide a focal point for bathers. The beach is exposed to wind and waves from the west and north-west. When these winds are blowing, they develop a moderately steep and narrow beach, fronted by a wide, shallow bar toward the south, and a deeper, shore parallel bar 100 m out. The waves also produce rip currents and channels that cut through both bars. The configuration is modified during strong winds and high waves, and so will change from year to year.
