Five Mile Beach is 7.9 km or 5 miles long. It runs straight throughout its length and faces the south-south-east. The northern end receives waves averaging 1.3 m, which produce occasional rips along the attached bar. Toward the south, the beach is partially protected by Cape Wellington and Horn Point and wave height decreases to less than 0.5 m. As this occurs, the beach steepens and a wider, shallow bar fronts the beach.
The beach can be reached by a walking track that comes out 1 km south of the northern point. A camping area is provided in the northern corner of the beach next to Miranda Creek and is called Five Mile Camp.
