Tidal River is the centre of all activities taking place on Wilsons Promontory. It is the site of a very large cabin, caravan and camping area, and provides most essential facilities. In summer it assumes the size of a small town. The settlement lies on low dunes just behind the beach; officially known as Norman Beach. The 1.6 km long beach is bounded by the prominent granite headlands of Norman and Pillar Points; both extending over 1 km seaward. The beach faces south-west, with Pillar Point and the offshore Glennie Group of islands providing some protection from westerly waves. The waves average 1.4 m at the beach and interact with the fine carbonate sand to build a wide, low gradient beach and surf zone. Rips are prevalent when waves exceed 1 m.
Beach Length: 1.6km
