The first three sand islands: Shoal Inlet, Shallow Inlet and Clonmel Island, are nearly a continuation of Ninety Mile Beach, only broken by Shoal, Shallow, Kate Kearney and Port Albert Inlets. The only access to the islands is by boat. All three consist of two parts. The first is the central section dominated by normal waves, which have produced a single, usually attached bar, cut by rips every 200 m. The second part consists of the ends of each island, which border the prominent inlets. The strong tidal flows through the inlets have produced both deep tidal channels and extensive tidal shoals. The shoals continue to change and modify the shape and size of the ends of the islands. Waves break well seaward of the beach on these shoals, causing the beach in their lee to be steep and barless. However, strong tidal currents flow along the sides of the beaches.
