Middle Rocks is a sloping, 80 m high, vegetated headland that impounds two beaches. The northern beach (FR5) is 150 m long and bordered and backed by bare basalt rocks, with high waves washing right to the rocks. It has permanent rips against the rocks at each end, a deep longshore trough and an outer bar. The southern beach (FR6) is similar; only 400 m in length, with a small foredune in the centre and vegetated backing rock slopes. The southern headland has a rock platform containing two large rock pools, called The Aquarium and the Champagne Pools. They were traditionally used by the aborigines as a natural fish trap. The beach itself has a moderate gradient swash zone, with rips against each headland and usually one central rip, then the longshore trough and outer bar.
